Rich in dialogue and full of drama, Notes on A Scandal is a psychological thriller directed by Richard Eyre from a novel of the same titlee. St. George's School, a comprehensive in north London has a new addition: art teacher Sheba Hart (Cate Blanchett), who is sphinx-like in her beauty. Her older colleague Barbara Covett (Judi Dench) quickly feels sexually attracted to her but watches in horror as Sheba sleeps with Steven Connelly (Andrew Simpson), one of her students. Barbara decides to use this secret affair to bind Sheba closer to her. The Guardian called the film a "delectable adaptation" with "tremendous acting from Judi Dench and Cate Blanchett, with many blue-chip supporting contributions and a "screenwriting masterclass from Patrick Marber". The Times praised the film, saying: "Notes on a Scandal, is screenwriting at its vicious best... Richard Eyre directs the film like a chamber play."
