The second in an intended trilogy by New York-based Romanian director Apetri in which he continues to re-draw the police thriller, Miracle has been universally praised by critics as something quite special. It’s a film of two halves: in the first a young novice Cristiana gets into a taxi in an agitated state and is driven from her convent to a hospital; in the second, police inspector Marius becomes obsessed with proving the guilt of a suspect held after a violent attack. Set against a backdrop of the entropy of present-day Romania, the various narrative threads and character motivations are gradually knitted together to culminate in a breath-taking reveal at the end of the film. The gripping slow-burn build-up to this moment is filled with a tension which will leave viewers on the edge of their seats.
